The Inspiration For This Project
For some years, I have been involved in social justice work, supporting and volunteering with various organisations such as World Vision, Vision Generation, The Oaktree Foundation, Oxfam Australia, the Make Poverty History campaign, and Amnesty International.
For Year 10 Work Experience I travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where I undertook 16 days of voluntary work in a number of local Ethiopian charity organisations. During this time I was struck by the vast contrast between my own childhood experiences and the opportunities that were available to me, and those of the children I came in contact with in Ethiopia. In particular, I was shocked to learn of the plight of child soldiers.
Prompted by the realisation of this inequality, I was inspired to take action, and through organising a fundraiser, I became aware of my own potential to dramatically change the situation on the ground. These experiences reinforced my determination to do something more “long lasting”, but to achieve this I knew I needed the help of my peers.
The Article Thirty-Nine Concert is the culmination of more than two years of ideas, aspirations and activism. To be held in Sydney on Universal Children’s Day, November 20, the concert will feature a range of musicians, representative speakers from aid and development organisations, university professors, and information and merchandise stalls.
My aim with the concert is to put child soldiers on the front line of our consciousness.
